The Old Balmain House Read online

  Prologue

We bought ourselves a new old house – a little timber cottage

It made us feel most welcome – giving out a sense of a lovely home

Soon it seemed we belonged here – living and making it our own

We glimpsed a hidden story - deep buried in its past

It told us of a little girl who lived here in the early century last

This little girl went off to school one day and never did come back

It seemed to those who looked so hard she’d vanished through a crack

For years and years her family searched for this missing elusive soul

Yet all they found was nothing – she had vanished without a trace

Loss carried down for years and years as generations passed

Her memory slowly dwindled, fading out of view at last

We heard a voice call out one day seeking our help for her return

We joined the search; she pulled us in, new people in her place

Across a century of time and space her presence drew us on

At last we found that vital clue, lost story from her grandmother

And as we walked those hidden steps her family became our own

Now, at last, after all that’s passed, we’ve safely brought her home
